The referee blew the whistle to start the match… Celtic Women’s player Maria Makanini stepped up and unleashed a powerful shot, scoring a stunning goal in the fourth second of the game, potentially the fastest goal in the history of women’s football.
The match ended with a victory over the defending champion, within professional league competitions, with a score of two goals to one.
There is no doubt that the first goal, scored by Makanini, was exceptionally remarkable. In the very first second of the match, Makanini fired an incredible shot from the center of the pitch immediately after the kick-off. The ball found the net despite the effort made by the Hibernian goalkeeper to prevent it from going in.
Approximately four seconds passed between the kick and the ball landing in the goal, making Maria’s goal the fastest in the league, and perhaps in the history of women’s football in Scotland.
Her teammate added a second goal, while Hibernian scored one, ending the encounter with Celtic winning the match and the three points. Celtic’s tally rose to 31 points, placing them second, tied on points with two other teams.
Glasgow City leads the league table, holding a 7-point advantage over their closest rivals before the winter break.
Makanini, who has shone notably this season, earning her first call-up to the Scottish national team, expressed her happiness with the victory.
She said in a statement: “We really needed these three points. We’ve been waiting for them for a long time, and I’m very happy we finally achieved them… We all put in a huge effort, and that was extremely important.”
