The historical horror film “Sinners,” set in the pre-World War II era, has broken the record for the most nominations in Oscar history, securing 16 nominations, as announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday.

The film surpassed the previous record of 14 nominations, held by “All About Eve,” “Titanic,” and “La La Land.”

The film received nominations in most major categories, including Best Picture, along with a nomination for Michael B. Jordan for Best Actor for his performance as a twin confronting supernatural forces and racists in the American South during the 1930s, in a drama steeped in blues music and a backdrop of racial discrimination.

The nominations spanned multiple categories, from screenplay and original score to acting, in addition to a nomination for Best Ensemble Cast, a new category added to the Oscars for the first time in over two decades.

The film “One Battle After Another” came in second with 13 nominations, including a nomination for Leonardo DiCaprio for Best Actor. Both films are produced by Warner Bros., the company currently being sought for acquisition by both Netflix and Paramount.

Meanwhile, the films “Frankenstein,” “Marty Supreme,” and “Sentimental Value” each received nine nominations, while the film “Haunt” received eight nominations.
