Tripoli, February 6, 2026 – The Public Prosecution in the jurisdiction of the Tobruk Court of Appeal ordered the detention of three accused individuals and the search for a civil registry employee on charges of involvement in forging family documents, which facilitated 59 Egyptians in obtaining national identification numbers.
According to a statement published on the Public Prosecutor’s Office page, a foreigner conspired with an employee of the Civil Registry Office in Tobruk to use a family registration number belonging to a family whose lineage had ended, in exchange for six thousand dinars received by the employee in 2002. They were thus able to issue a family document, from which other documents were branched out, facilitating 59 foreigners—citizens of the Arab Republic of Egypt—in obtaining national numbers and benefiting from rights derived from citizenship.
The office clarified that, accordingly, the investigation committee for cases of civil status data forgery, within the jurisdiction of the Tobruk Court of Appeal, decided to suspend all documents issued based on the forgery, trace the benefits gained from it, and ordered the search for the civil registry employee who breached his duty of trust. It then ordered the detention of three accused individuals who contributed to completing the forgery, pending investigation.
