Tripoli – January 5, 2025 – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya welcomed all mediation efforts undertaken by Libyan parties to address the ongoing dispute concerning the constitutional judiciary, including an initiative to form a mediation committee comprising a select group of Libyan legal experts.
The mission clarified that the mediation committee aims to provide options that ensure the continuity of constitutional oversight and preserve the pivotal role of the judiciary as a fundamental pillar of the Libyan state, emphasizing the importance of reaching legal solutions that respect the independence and unity of the judiciary.
The mission revealed in an official statement that the mediation committee consists of individuals with extensive legal expertise and decades of experience serving Libya’s judicial and legal systems. It affirmed its commitment to supporting the mediation committee in performing its duties and assisting its efforts to reach a consensual resolution to this dispute.
The mission stressed the importance of this initiative in contributing to preserving the unity and independence of the judiciary and ensuring consistency in judicial practices and rulings across the country, noting that this is “of utmost importance to all aspects of Libyan citizens’ lives.”
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya called on all concerned parties to cooperate constructively with the mediation committee to ensure the success of its efforts and the achievement of its desired objectives.
