
Benghazi, December 31, 2025 – The committee concerned with monitoring and documenting the conditions of Libyans imprisoned abroad discussed the cases and files related to Libyan citizens detained outside the country, from legal and humanitarian perspectives, and ways to effectively follow up on them to ensure the protection of their rights and the improvement of their conditions.
During its meeting today, Wednesday, at the House of Representatives’ headquarters, the committee also reviewed updated statistics on the conditions of Libyans imprisoned abroad. The number of cases under follow-up reached (298) prisoners, with (113) citizens released, and rulings issued in (128) cases, in addition to two cases of withdrawal or deportation.
The committee pointed out that rulings have been issued for the release of (47) prisoners and the deportation of (18) citizens, while emphasizing that some cases are still under completion and follow-up.
The committee stressed the importance of enhancing communication and coordination with Libyan embassies abroad, and the necessity of formally and periodically informing the Attorney General and the President of the House of Representatives about the developments in these files, and taking the necessary measures regarding them. This contributes to accelerating the pace of processing and ensuring the rights of Libyan citizens abroad.
The committee also agreed to hold a joint meeting with the Attorney General and the head of the committee for monitoring the conditions of prisoners and prisons in the government mandated by parliament to discuss mechanisms for joint coordination and unifying efforts to address these files comprehensively and effectively.
It is worth noting that the committee concerned with monitoring and documenting the conditions of Libyans imprisoned abroad was formed pursuant to House of Representatives President’s Decision No. (62) of 2025.
