TRIPOLI, February 5, 2026 – The head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya met with the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Libya to discuss the latest developments in the Libyan political process and ways to support efforts aimed at creating the appropriate conditions for holding peaceful and comprehensive elections.

During the meeting, both sides emphasized the importance of moving the political process forward in a way that enhances stability and responds to the aspirations of the Libyan people to end the transitional phases through a sustainable political process.

The discussions also addressed the structured dialogue sponsored by the UN Mission. The head of the mission stressed the necessity for the process to be purely Libyan-Libyan, ensuring that realistic recommendations are reached to help create a suitable political and security environment for holding elections.

The two parties discussed the importance of formulating a shared vision for Libya’s future, based on national consensus, respect for the country’s sovereignty, and support for Libyan institutions, which would enhance opportunities for achieving peace and lasting stability.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) was established in 2011 by the UN Security Council following the Libyan Civil War to assist the country’s transitional authorities.
