European gas markets saw a sharp price increase at the end of 2025, with blue fuel futures rising by about 3% during Monday’s trading.

By 10:08 Moscow time, futures contracts for next January on the Dutch “TTF” index, the main benchmark for gas prices on the European continent, had risen by 2.8% to reach $351.7 per thousand cubic meters, after opening trading with a 2.3% increase at $349.9 per thousand cubic meters.

The average price of gas futures on the European exchange during 2025 was $386.50 per thousand cubic meters, down 16.3% from the average price in 2024.

This increase is part of the volatility in European gas markets, which are influenced by seasonal factors, the level of industrial demand, and geopolitical tensions in key production regions, making prices susceptible to rapid and continuous changes.

These developments indicate that European gas markets are still facing mixed pressures between the lower annual average for the current year and the rise in spot prices due to seasonal and political supply and demand factors, which is reflected in energy costs and related industries on the continent.

Historically, European gas markets have experienced sharp fluctuations in recent years, particularly in the wake of geopolitical crises and the impact of climate on production and demand, making Europe more sensitive to any changes in global energy prices.
