The Norwegian Royal Palace announced on Friday that Princess Mette-Marit, who suffers from a chronic lung disease, will likely undergo a lung transplant after a “marked deterioration” in her health.

The wife of Crown Prince Haakon (52) was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2018, a chronic disease that causes breathing difficulties, and has repeatedly had to take sick leave or reduce her official schedule.

A professor in the Department of Pulmonary Diseases at Rikshospitalet stated, “We are approaching the stage where a lung transplant will be necessary, and we are making the necessary preparations to perform it when the time comes.”

He added, according to a palace statement, “At this stage, a date for placing the Princess on the waiting list for a lung transplant has not yet been determined.”

The palace explained on Friday that “several tests the Princess underwent this autumn showed a clear deterioration in her health.”

Norwegian Royal Palace

The Norwegian Royal Palace in Oslo serves as the official residence of the Norwegian monarch. Constructed in the first half of the 19th century during the union with Sweden, it symbolizes Norwegian independence and is a central site for state ceremonies and public events.

Oslo

Oslo is the capital and most populous city of Norway, founded around 1040 AD by King Harald Hardrada. It served as the nation’s capital since the reign of Håkon V in the early 14th century, and its history is marked by several rebuilds, most notably after a devastating fire in 1624 when it was relocated and renamed Christiania. Today, it is a modern cultural hub known for its museums, green spaces, and the annual Nobel Peace Prize ceremony.

Rikshospitalet

Rikshospitalet is a major university hospital in Oslo, Norway, originally founded in 1826 as the country’s first national hospital to serve patients from all regions. It is now part of Oslo University Hospital and is a central hub for specialized medical treatment, research, and education.

Nobel Peace Prize

The Nobel Peace Prize is one of the five Nobel Prizes established by the will of Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel in 1895. It is awarded annually to individuals or organizations that have done the most to promote peace, with the first prize awarded in 1901 to Henry Dunant and Frédéric Passy.
