Tripoli, January 24, 2026 – The Ministry of Local Government held a coordination meeting with representatives of the German Cooperation Agency (GIZ) to follow up on the implementation of events and activities for the “Eco-Friendly School” project in a number of municipalities.
The meeting was attended by representatives from the General Department of Environmental Sanitation, the International Cooperation Office, and the Ministry’s Media Office via “Zoom” technology, alongside specialists from the GIZ.
Participants discussed the results and reports from the field meetings previously held with municipalities and winning schools in Tripoli, Benghazi, and Misrata, as well as schools in the partner municipality of Jadu, based on the official report dated December 22, 2025.
The proposed detailed action plan and the activities to be implemented were also reviewed, with a focus on the environmental programs designed for the schools that won the “Eco-Friendly School” competition. This aims to promote and encourage sound environmental practices within educational institutions.
These activities include conducting an environmental assessment survey with student participation, creating an “environmental map” of the school highlighting strengths and weaknesses, allocating and managing green spaces sustainably, implementing a “single-use plastic-free school” policy, alongside managing waste safely and establishing an integrated source-separation system.
The activities also involve promoting a “Healthy Environmental Monitor” culture among students, preparing monthly reports on air quality and general cleanliness levels, setting up a mini environmental lab within schools, organizing an annual conference to showcase student environmental research, in addition to applying locally adapted international “Green School” standards, rationalizing water consumption, and maintaining its cleanliness and sterilization.
The meeting aims to enhance coordination between the Ministry of Local Government, local authorities, and international partners to ensure the effective implementation of joint environmental projects and contribute to raising environmental awareness and creating a sustainable educational environment.
The meeting also included a review of observations and recommendations from previous meetings with Misrata municipality to establish practical mechanisms for addressing them and ensuring their alignment with the project’s overall plan.
At the conclusion of the meeting, final agreement was reached on the action plan, defining the roles and responsibilities assigned to the Ministry of Local Government, the concerned municipalities, and the partner institution, in addition to establishing follow-up and evaluation mechanisms to ensure proper implementation.
