French President Emmanuel Macron announced that the French navy intercepted an oil tanker in the Mediterranean Sea on Thursday, suspecting it belongs to the “shadow fleet” financing the “aggressive war on Ukraine.”
The French President stated in a message on the platform “X” that this tanker, “subject to international sanctions and suspected of flying a false flag,” was detained “with the help of a number of our allies.” He added that “the ship’s course was diverted” and “a judicial investigation was opened.”
It is noted that since Western sanctions were imposed on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Moscow has relied on hundreds of these ships, whose owners are shrouded in mystery and which operate under dubious insurance contracts.
