Barcelona president Joan Laporta said he is ready to mend the relationship with Inter Miami star Lionel Messi, confirming that the Argentine legend deserves a fitting tribute and a statue at Camp Nou.

Laporta emphasizes that he is keen to make up for Messi’s departure and even suggested building a statue to honor his legacy.

The Barça president said, “I signed Messi’s first contract when he was sixteen years old. What we experienced with him is among the finest moments in Barcelona’s history, if not the finest of all. He deserves tribute, a statue, and full appreciation.”

He added, “It also depends on the other party. I am ready to resolve any problem. Messi gave a lot to Barcelona, and Barcelona gave a lot to him. I hope we meet again one day.”

Regarding Messi’s controversial departure in 2021, Laporta stated, “The topic of Messi saddens me. I am a Barcelona fan, but above all else is the club. If I were a member, I would have understood what the president did for the good of the club.”

Messi’s Sad Departure

Messi’s contract with Barcelona officially ended on June 30, 2021, with the club announcing its inability to renew it due to financial constraints and restrictions from La Liga.

The Argentine star joined Paris Saint-Germain on August 10, 2021, in one of the most controversial transfers in football history.

Messi finally returned to Barcelona on a secret tour of the recently renovated Camp Nou stadium, showing his love for the team without the knowledge of Barcelona’s management.

Messi’s departure was one of the biggest disappointments of Laporta’s current presidency, and he acknowledges his regret over it as he prepares for the club’s upcoming presidential elections.
