Benghazi, January 23, 2026 – The Gulf Oil Company has begun implementing solar energy systems at a number of its vital sites, a step aimed at reducing reliance on traditional fuel and improving energy consumption efficiency.

The first phase of the project included the company’s headquarters in Benghazi, in addition to the Al-Hariqa terminal and the Tobruk refinery.

The project relies on integrated solar energy systems designed according to precise technical specifications, with the participation of specialized technical teams to ensure their suitability for operating conditions at oil sites and to achieve the desired operational goals, while adhering to timelines and administrative plans to ensure sustainable performance in the medium and long term.

Specialists believe that introducing solar energy into the oil sector is not only an environmental dimension but also an economic and operational choice that reduces fuel and maintenance costs, especially given the instability of electricity in some areas.

The company’s move towards solar energy reflects its awareness of the importance of diversifying energy sources and improving operational efficiency to ensure the continuity of work at oil sites.

Benghazi

Benghazi is a major city in eastern Libya, historically significant as a center of trade and culture since its founding as the ancient Greek colony of Euesperides. It played a pivotal role in Libya’s modern history, serving as the provisional capital after the 2011 revolution and being a key site during the 2011 civil war.

Gulf Oil Company

The Gulf Oil Company was founded in 1901 following the discovery of oil at Spindletop in Texas, rapidly growing into one of the world’s major petroleum corporations. It was historically known for its iconic orange disc logo and played a significant role in the global oil industry throughout the 20th century. Much of its U.S. operations were acquired by Chevron in the 1980s, though the brand continues in other markets.

Al-Hariqa terminal

Al-Hariqa terminal is a major public transportation hub located in the heart of Damascus, Syria. Historically, the area around it, known as Al-Hariqa (“the fire”), was a significant commercial district that was largely destroyed by a great fire in 1925 during the Great Syrian Revolt against French Mandate rule. The modern terminal now serves as a central point for buses and minibuses connecting the capital to various regions across the country.

Tobruk refinery

The Tobruk refinery is an oil refinery located near the port city of Tobruk in eastern Libya. It was inaugurated in 1986 to process crude oil from the nearby Sarir field, playing a key strategic role in the country’s petroleum industry. Its operations have been frequently disrupted by the conflict and instability in Libya since 2011.
