In a new regulatory step aimed at restructuring the energy sector, the Ministry of Oil and Gas of the interim Government of National Unity has completed procedures to transfer the affiliation of the General Gas Transmission and Distribution Company to the National Oil Corporation, implementing a decision issued by the Cabinet of Ministers earlier this year.
The ministry announced on Monday that the procedures for transferring the company’s affiliation have been officially completed, explaining that the handover and takeover ceremony was held in the presence of the Minister of Oil and Gas, Khalifa Abdulsadek, and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Oil Corporation, Masoud Suleiman, to complete the implementation of Cabinet Resolution No. 268 of 2026, which stipulates attaching the company to the National Oil Corporation.
The Cabinet of Ministers had issued Resolution No. 268 of 2026 on May 18, which stipulated transferring the affiliation of the General Gas Transmission and Distribution Company to the National Oil Corporation, adopting the city of Tripoli as the company’s main headquarters, assigning the powers of the General Assembly to the Board of Directors of the National Oil Corporation, along with canceling any provisions that contradict the resolution’s terms.
This is the second change of its kind in the company’s affiliation in recent years, after it had been transferred in September 2022 from the Ministry of Housing and Reconstruction to the Ministry of Oil and Gas under Cabinet Resolution No. 768 of 2022, before being transferred again to the National Oil Corporation according to the new resolution.
Under the new procedures, the National Oil Corporation has become the entity responsible for administrative and regulatory oversight of the company, as part of a direction aimed at enhancing the efficiency of managing the gas transmission and distribution sector and supporting the development of its operations within the corporation’s institutional structure.
The transfer of affiliation comes after years of technical cooperation between the two sides, as the National Oil Corporation had previously held an expanded meeting in 2021 with the management of the General Gas Transmission and Distribution Company, which discussed mechanisms for cooperation in implementing gas transmission projects, developing infrastructure, and involving the company in a number of the corporation’s projects, paving the way for the coordination path that culminated today in the official transfer of affiliation.
