Indonesian Central Bank Governor Resigns Before Term Ends

The governor of Indonesia’s central bank resigned on Monday before the end of his term, according to a government announcement, as the country struggles with a declining currency and other economic problems stemming from the war in the Middle East.

State Minister Prasetyo Hadi told reporters in Jakarta that President Prabowo Subianto had accepted the resignation of Perry Warjiyo, who had served as Governor of Bank Indonesia since 2018. His second term was due to end in 2028.

Appointment of Deputy Governor
Warjiyo cited personal reasons for his resignation, which he submitted on July 25, without disclosing further details.

Prasetyo said the President expressed his deep gratitude to Warjiyo “for his dedication over nearly seven years leading Bank Indonesia,” adding that the bank’s Senior Deputy Governor, Destri Damayanti, had been appointed as acting governor.

The Indonesian currency has been severely impacted by the surge in energy prices resulting from the war in the Middle East.

Rise in Consumer Prices in June
According to reports, the Indonesian currency is the worst performer in Asia, having lost nearly 7% of its value since the start of the war. Bank Indonesia raised its main interest rate by 100 basis points this year to 5.75%.

Indonesia has the largest economy in Southeast Asia and is a net oil importer. The government has insisted on continuing to heavily subsidize fuel prices despite the substantial costs borne by the state treasury.

Consumer prices rose by 3.34% in June, and increasing economic pressures have led to student protests demanding the government stop excessive spending, particularly a billion-dollar free meal program, which was later scaled back.
