A doctor noted that a cough is not a single symptom with fixed characteristics, but rather takes multiple forms and types that differ in their causes and health implications, emphasizing that accurately identifying the type of cough helps in understanding what is happening inside the body.
It was stated that a cough is a natural reaction of the body and is linked to internal problems, confirming that the presence of an irritant or infection causes swelling or discomfort in the airway, prompting the body to cough to expel what is causing this irritation to prevent it from remaining in or spreading within the respiratory system.
It was explained that a cough can be classified into 5 different categories, each with its own causes, features, and the correct way to handle it.
Dry Cough
This type is a dry cough and does not produce any phlegm.
This type usually improves on its own within days or weeks and is typically mild, but if it does not improve after three weeks, it could be a sign of cancer or acid reflux.
It was added that this type may be caused by something moving to the lungs, and a cough is often a concerning sign.
If it is an early sign of cancer, it is often accompanied by weight loss, poor appetite, and other symptoms.
Wet Cough
This type is accompanied by mucus and gurgling or rattling sounds.
This type often goes away within 3 to 4 weeks without treatment and is associated with nasal congestion or a runny nose, where excess mucus is also expelled through the nose.
Parents are advised to monitor signs of breathing difficulties, such as increased breathing rate or difficulty breathing, in young children or those unable to express themselves.
In mild cases, it can be managed with rest, and consuming some fluids and soft foods. If it worsens at night, it is recommended to sleep with the head elevated using pillows.
Wheezing Cough
It was stressed that a cough accompanied by wheezing, such as a whistling sound heard during coughing or even during breathing, should be taken seriously.
It was added that this cough is associated with asthma and certain diseases, and could be a sign of an asthma attack.
Whooping Cough
This is a cough that causes severe fits where the sufferer feels intense choking, and is the result of a highly contagious infection.
This cough is dangerous when it affects infants under twelve months, as it can lead to dehydration, breathing problems, pneumonia, and even seizures.
This cough requires prompt treatment with antibiotics and hospitalization in severe cases.
Chronic Cough
Chronic cough is the most difficult to diagnose and may be caused by various conditions, chronic bronchitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, or serious illnesses like lung cancer.
It was stated: “If a cough persists for more than 8 weeks, a doctor should be consulted to avoid the progression of the disease.”
