Chinese company BYD, the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer, is designing a new model for India, as part of its efforts to boost its rapid global growth.

Engineers at BYD’s headquarters in Shenzhen, southern China, are working on the design, although a launch date for the model has not yet been announced.

It was noted during participation in the World Government Summit in Dubai that “India is a market for us, but we need to make more efforts.”

The company, founded in 1995 and initially specialized in battery manufacturing, sold 2.26 million electric vehicles last year, surpassing its rival Tesla.

It was announced that the Chinese company is currently planning to “launch a new model specifically for India,” without delving into any details.

It was stated, “My team is working on it, but there is still work to be done.” A report suggesting that BYD was planning to build a car assembly plant in India was denied.

Relations between the world’s two most populous countries are improving after a border clash in 2020, and direct flights between them resumed in October after a five-year halt.

BYD is currently aiming for a minimum of 24% external growth this year, equivalent to 1.3 million cars, including hybrid models.

The company’s sales in China have been declining since the government adjusted its electric vehicle subsidy program, with numbers continuing to fall in January for the fifth consecutive month.

Models that ‘Change the Equation’
It was stated that BYD’s focus is on “all markets except the United States,” where Chinese imports face high tariffs.

Despite warnings of a growth slowdown in Europe, where hybrids outsold fuel-powered cars last year, it was said that new models will boost sales.

It was noted that longer-range hybrid models are aimed at “people who do not trust electric vehicles,” suggesting these models “change the equation.”

Following China’s ban on hidden door handles due to safety concerns, BYD will also introduce mechanical door handles in its models for foreign markets.
