Portuguese coach Rúben Amorim has left his position at Manchester United through the back door, as the team’s statistics during his tenure reveal a catastrophic record.

Manchester United announced Amorim’s (40) dismissal on Monday, following his shocking statements made the previous Sunday. The Portuguese coach has become the worst manager in the history of the “Red Devils” in the English Premier League.

Amorim is the worst manager in Manchester United’s history

Since taking charge on November 11, 2024, Amorim led Manchester United in 47 Premier League matches. The team won only 15 games, lost 19, and drew 13.

The team’s win rate during his 14-month tenure was approximately 32%, while the loss rate exceeded 40%.

Amorim’s numbers are notably worse even than those of German coach Ralf Rangnick, who managed to win 10 out of 24 matches he led the “Red Devils” in the Premier League, a win rate of 41.6%.

As for his Dutch predecessor Erik ten Hag, despite the many criticisms he faced, he won more than half of his 85 matches with United, with a win rate of 51.8%.

It was noted that since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson – the legendary Manchester United manager – from the bench in 2013, no subsequent manager has come close to his impressive win rate of 65.2%.

Mourinho the best after the Ferguson era

Portuguese coach José Mourinho is considered the most successful manager to have passed through Old Trafford after Ferguson’s golden era. The Portuguese led Manchester United to victory in 50 out of 93 Premier League matches, a rate of 53.8%.

Statistics of Manchester United managers in the Premier League since Ferguson’s departure:

  • José Mourinho: Won 50 out of 93 matches, a rate of 53.8%.
  • Erik ten Hag: Won 44 out of 85 matches, a rate of 51.8%.
  • Ole Gunnar Solskjær: Won 56 out of 109 matches, a rate of 51.4%.
  • Louis van Gaal: Won 39 out of 76 matches, a rate of 51.3%.
  • David Moyes: Won 17 out of 34 matches, a rate of 50%.
  • Ralf Rangnick: Won 10 out of 24 matches, a rate of 41.6%.
  • Rúben Amorim: Won 15 out of 47 matches, a rate of 31.9%.

Some facts and figures related to Amorim’s era with Manchester United were reviewed as follows:

  • Amorim is the seventh Manchester United manager to be dismissed since Ferguson’s retirement.
  • Amorim is the third manager after the Ferguson era to fail to reach 50 matches with Manchester United in the Premier League, alongside Rangnick and Moyes.
  • Amorim is the eighth manager to lead the “Red Devils” since the start of the English Premier League in the 1992-1993 season.
  • Only 6 managers have lower win rates than Amorim in United’s entire history in the English top flight: Alfred Hubert Albut, Scott Duncan, Walter Crickmer, Wilf McGuinness, Herbert Bamlett, and Jack Robson.
  • Under Amorim’s leadership, Manchester United became the fourth weakest defense in the Premier League.

Amorim’s departure from United

Amorim left Manchester United with the team occupying sixth place in the current season’s table with 31 points, 17 points behind leaders Arsenal and only 3 points behind fourth-placed Liverpool, which qualifies for the Champions League.
