A recently released document from the U.S. Department of Justice revealed that a close associate of the late, convicted American financier Jeffrey Epstein had drawn up plans to seek access to Libya’s frozen sovereign assets, citing financial and legal opportunities linked to the political and economic uncertainty in Libya at the time.
It is believed that approximately $80 billion of Libyan funds are frozen internationally, including about $32.4 billion in the United States. The true figure is estimated to be three to four times this amount when accounting for sovereign assets, stolen, and embezzled funds.
The documents stated: “If we can identify or recover between 5% and 10% of these funds, and secure a fee ranging from 10% to 25%, we are talking about billions of dollars.”
The documents reported that a number of former members of the British foreign intelligence service (MI6) and the Israeli foreign intelligence service (Mossad) expressed willingness to assist in efforts to identify and recover what was described as “stolen assets.”
They pointed to expectations that Libya would need to spend at least $100 billion in the future on reconstruction and economic recovery.
“But the real incentive is that if we can become their go-to people, it’s because they plan to spend at least $100 billion next year to rebuild their country and stimulate the economy,” according to the letter.
The letter also described Libya as a country with substantial energy reserves alongside high education rates, factors the sender considered elements that could be leveraged in financial and legal initiatives and activities.
