Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, the developer of the ChatGPT chatbot, predicted that artificial intelligence will surpass human capabilities when such systems possess “infinite and perfect memory.”
He stated in an interview on the “Big Technology Podcast” that the development he looks forward to most is enabling AI to “remember every single detail of your entire life,” confirming that his company plans to reach this stage by 2026.
OpenAI and other companies are working to improve AI capabilities in the areas of reasoning and thinking.
Altman said: “Even if you have the best personal assistant in the world, they cannot remember every word you’ve ever said in your life, they cannot read every document you write, they cannot follow all your daily work and remember every small detail, they cannot be that involved in your life. No human possesses infinite and perfect memory.”
He added: “But AI will definitely be able to do that. We talk about this a lot, as memory is currently still very primitive and in its early stages.”
Altman’s comments came weeks after reports indicated he declared a “code red” within his company following Google’s launch of the latest versions of its Gemini program.
In November, Google described the Gemini model as ushering in a “new era” of AI after achieving record results in a number of tests.
However, Altman downplayed the severity of the threat posed by “Gemini 3,” saying: “It’s good to be cautious and move quickly when a potential competitive threat emerges. The same thing happened to us before, and happened earlier this year with DeepSeek and Gemini 3. It hasn’t had, so far, the impact we feared, but it revealed some weaknesses in our products and strategies, and we are addressing that quickly.”
OpenAI currently has about 800 million users, according to the company, representing 71 percent of the AI applications market share.
