Kirill Polous, Deputy Chairman of the Russian energy company Gazprom, said on Tuesday that U.S. dominance in the liquefied natural gas market has driven prices in Europe to three times what they were when large volumes were supplied to the European market.
Speaking at the “LNG Summit for the Indian and Pacific Oceans” in Indonesia, Polous stressed that claims that LNG is more reliable than pipeline gas in Europe do not reflect reality.
He added: “Europe’s dependence on Russian gas was criticized in the past, but today 60% of Europe’s LNG imports come from the United States, and its share in Germany’s LNG imports has exceeded 90%.”
Before the outbreak of the war, Gazprom was the largest supplier of natural gas to Europe, with a market share of about 40% by 2022.
Due to Western sanctions, the company has lost a significant portion of its customers to other suppliers, such as the United States, Qatar, and Norway. Its exports to Europe fell to about 18 billion cubic meters in 2025, compared to 201.7 billion cubic meters in 2021.
