Ahead of the official GDP data release on Friday, US President Donald Trump indicated that last year’s record-long government shutdown slowed growth by at least two percentage points.
In the same context, the US economy grew by 2.2% for the entire year of 2025, while growth slowed more than expected in the final months of the year, according to government data released on Friday.
Trump stated on his platform, Truth Social: “The shutdown caused by the Democrats cost the United States at least two points in its Gross Domestic Product. So they are repeating it on a miniature scale.”
The US economy records 2.2% growth for 2025
Trump’s statement came about half an hour before the Commerce Department was scheduled to publish its growth estimates for the fourth quarter and for the entire year of 2025. The government is currently experiencing a partial shutdown, affecting only the Department of Homeland Security.
For its part, the US Commerce Department stated that the world’s largest economy recorded an annualized growth rate from October to December of last year of 1.4%, resulting in GDP growth for the entire year of 2.2%.
– Due to the government shutdown, the United States is unable to publish the October inflation report.
– Washington: Trump signs a bill to end the government shutdown and accuses Democrats of “blackmail.”
The government shutdown is a recurring political pressure tool in Washington, used by each side to force the other to make concessions. However, its repercussions quickly extend to the economy and public services, with hundreds of thousands of federal employees having their work suspended or being forced to work without pay.
