Open AI and the Indian consulting company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) announced on Thursday the establishment of a data center in India, a country currently hosting a global summit on artificial intelligence.
The two companies stated that this infrastructure will enhance the capabilities of the next generation of artificial intelligence and will make India a leading global hub in this field.
Data centers capable of training and operating AI systems are being built worldwide in a frenzied race to develop these technologies. However, the vast amounts of electricity required to run them and the water used to cool servers raise serious concerns at a time when several countries have pledged efforts to limit climate change.
Open AI and TCS unveiled a multi-year partnership on Thursday to develop AI infrastructure in India. TCS will initially build data centers with a capacity of 100 megawatts, with the potential to expand to 1 gigawatt. This computing capacity is commonly referred to as “super capacity.”
The two companies and the Tata Group, the parent company of TCS, also announced other projects, including providing a professional version of the ChatGPT program to thousands of Tata employees.
