Indonesia announced on Sunday that it has allowed the chat application Grok, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, to resume its services, lifting a ban imposed due to explicit images on the app, after the company X pledged to comply with the country’s laws.
A statement from the Ministry of Communications and Digital Affairs, seen on Sunday, said the government is working to resume access “under strict conditions and supervision.”
Neither X nor X.AI, which operates the chat app, has yet responded to requests for comment sent via email outside of business hours.
Nearly a month ago, authorities in Indonesia, located in Southeast Asia, suspended the operation of Grok, citing the risk of AI-generated pornographic content, becoming the first country to block access to the AI tool.
It is noted that governments and regulatory bodies in various countries from Europe to Asia have denounced the pornographic content provided by the Grok app, with some opening investigations into the matter.
