On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump signed a law ending the four-day partial government shutdown.
Trump stated, “This law is a major victory for the American people,” referring to the legislation that had been stalled by Democratic opposition to funding the federal agency implementing his large-scale campaign against irregular immigration.
Earlier on Tuesday, the US House of Representatives approved a budget bill putting an end to more than three days of a government shutdown that affected part of the federal administration.
A government shutdown is a recurring political pressure tool in Washington, used by each side to push the other into making concessions. However, its repercussions quickly extend to the economy and public services, with hundreds of thousands of federal employees having their work suspended or being forced to work without pay.
United States
The United States is a federal republic founded in 1776 after declaring independence from Great Britain, establishing itself through a revolutionary war and the adoption of a constitution in 1787. It grew from thirteen original colonies to span the North American continent, becoming a global economic and military power in the 20th century. Its diverse culture is shaped by a history of immigration, democratic ideals, and significant internal conflicts, including the Civil War and the civil rights movement.
Washington
Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States, was founded in 1790 following the Residence Act and named after the first U.S. president, George Washington.
