US President Donald Trump has reignited the debate on climate issues, casting doubt on the phenomenon of global warming, as the United States prepares to face a severe and unusual cold wave that could affect dozens of states.
On Friday, Trump wrote in a post on his “Truth Social” platform that a harsh cold wave is expected to hit about 40 American states, considering what will happen to be “rare and unprecedented.”
The US President added: “Can the environmentalists please explain to us where the phenomenon went?”
Trump is one of the most prominent skeptics of the scientific consensus on global warming and has repeatedly expressed his positions.
Forecasts predict snowfall, bitter cold, and freezing rain in the South, Midwest, and East Coast of the United States over the weekend.
Twelve states have declared a state of emergency, while other regions unaccustomed to severe cold are preparing to face power outages and supply shortages, according to American media.
More than 230 million people are expected to be affected by this wave from Friday through Sunday.
In some states, residents rushed to stock up on essential supplies such as bottled water, electricity generators, and food.
The meteorological authority said snow accumulations are expected to exceed 12 inches in the Ohio Valley, the Mid-Atlantic, and the Northeast.
Temperatures are expected to drop below freezing in southern states accustomed to mild conditions.
