Apple and Google announce strategic partnership to run AI features on iPhone devices

Apple and Google announced on Monday a multi-year partnership that will see Apple’s next-generation artificial intelligence features, including the “Siri” assistant, run using Google’s “Gemini” platform.

This cooperation represents a significant shift for Apple, which has been accustomed to developing its core technologies internally. A joint statement clarified that the company chose Google’s AI-based assistant after a “rigorous evaluation” concluded that it provides the “most capable foundation” for achieving the company’s ambitions in the field of artificial intelligence on iPhone devices.

The announcement forms a rare alliance between two companies that have long competed in the smartphone market, where Apple’s “iOS” and Google’s “Android” operating systems dominate globally. Despite the competition, the two companies have maintained a profitable partnership for years, with Google paying Apple billions of dollars annually to keep its search engine as the default on iPhones.

However, regulators have criticized this partnership. The U.S. Department of Justice considered it to reinforce Google
