The awards season in Hollywood kicks off this Sunday with the Golden Globe Awards ceremony, amid predictions that the film ‘One Battle After Another’ by director Paul Thomas Anderson, which deals with extreme paths in the United States, will dominate. The film, which received nine nominations, is expected to win the awards for Best Comedy Film and Best Director.
This tragicomic film “is sweeping the awards and seems to be strongly headed” for winning the Oscar for Best Picture in two months, having recently dominated a large number of less significant awards ceremonies.
Deep Divisions in American Society
The film reflects the deep divisions in contemporary American society through a family story set in a highly polarized community, where the contradictions between the political legacy of the Black Power movement and the legacy of the Ku Klux Klan find only violence as a means of resolution.
Leonardo DiCaprio plays a former revolutionary from the far left, his mind clouded by drug use, who must gather his strength and regain his consciousness to save his mixed-race daughter from the grip of a white supremacist extremist.
In the Best Actor category, DiCaprio competes with Timothée Chalamet, who shone in the role of an ambitious ping-pong player in the film ‘Marty Supreme’.
‘Sinners’ Competes with ‘Hamnet’
Tayana Taylor could expand her list of awards if she wins the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance as a passionate woman in the film ‘One Battle After Another’. However, the competition for this award will be fierce with Amy Madigan (for the film ‘Webbens’) and Ariana Grande (for the film ‘Wicked: Part Two’).
The Golden Globe Awards ceremony separates comedy and drama films, preventing ‘One Battle After Another’ from competing against ‘Sinners’, its competitor for the Oscar for Best Picture.
Meanwhile, the Norwegian film ‘Sentimental Value’, which received eight nominations and in which Joachim Trier portrays the painful relationship between a film director father and his two daughters, could cause an upset in the Best Drama Film category.
After a scandal revealed racial bias and corruption among its members in 2021, the Golden Globes implemented a series of reforms in recent years, adding more than 200 voters from around the world.
Will ‘A Simple Accident’ Win?
This “makes predictions more difficult,” but it is noted that “these new voters are less inclined towards huge commercial successes and more receptive to global films that were well-received at the Cannes and Venice festivals.”
Brazilian actor Wagner Moura could surpass Michael B. Jordan, star of the film ‘Sinners’, in winning the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama Film, thanks to his role in ‘The Secret Agent’, for which he previously won an award at the Cannes festival. The favorite to win the Best Supporting Actor award is Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård for his role in the film ‘Sentimental Value’.
The films ‘The Secret Agent’ and ‘Sentimental Value’ also compete for the Best International Feature Film award alongside ‘A Simple Accident’, which represents France at the Oscars. This work was directed by Iranian dissident filmmaker Jafar Panahi, who was sentenced to a year in prison in his home country after winning the Palme d’Or at the Cannes festival.
Rose Byrne (for the film ‘F.I. Had Legs, I’d Kick You’) stands out among the favorites to win the award for Best Actress in a Comedy Film, while the film ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’ is expected to win in the Best Animated Film category.
