Puerto Rican boxer Amanda Serrano retained her featherweight titles from the World Boxing Association, World Boxing Organization, and The Ring magazine after defeating American fighter Rena Tellez by unanimous decision in a match held in Puerto Rico on Saturday.

Serrano (37 years old) showcased her experience and control in the later stages of the fight, securing victory with scores of 98-92, 97-93, and 97-93 at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan. This was Serrano’s first fight in her home country since 2021.

Rena Tellez, who was called up at the last minute last month, posed a strong challenge to Serrano, a world champion in seven weight classes. The American managed to land a powerful left-handed punch on Serrano in the fifth round, causing swelling under her right eye. However, Serrano also delivered strong and impactful punches to Tellez’s face, resulting in swelling around her right eye.

Serrano said, “I thank Rena and am grateful to her for stepping in at the last moment and participating in the fight. She is a fierce fighter.”

This victory brings Serrano’s professional record to 48 wins against four losses—three of those losses to undisputed world welterweight champion Katie Taylor—and one draw.

She added, “It’s been two years since my last fight at this weight. I feel the upcoming fights will be much better, and I’m happy I was able to put on an entertaining show for the fans.”

It is worth noting that in December 2023, boxer Amanda Serrano relinquished her World Boxing Council title because the council refused to allow her to fight under the same rules as men’s bouts, which consist of 12 three-minute rounds. Women’s boxing matches are typically scheduled for ten two-minute rounds.

Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is a Caribbean island and unincorporated U.S. territory, originally inhabited by the Taíno people before becoming a Spanish colony for over 400 years following Christopher Columbus’s arrival in 1493. It was ceded to the United States in 1898 after the Spanish-American War, and its distinct culture is a vibrant blend of Indigenous, Spanish, African, and American influences.

Coliseo Roberto Clemente

The Coliseo Roberto Clemente is a multi-purpose indoor arena located in San Juan, Puerto Rico, inaugurated in 1973. It was named in honor of the Puerto Rican baseball legend Roberto Clemente, a Hall of Fame right fielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates who died in a plane crash in 1972 while delivering aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. The venue has since hosted a wide variety of events, including concerts, sports, and political assemblies.

San Juan

San Juan is the capital and largest city of Puerto Rico, founded by Spanish colonists in 1521. It is renowned for its well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture, most notably the massive fortifications of El Morro and San Cristóbal, which protected the strategic harbor for centuries. The historic Old San Juan district features colorful buildings and cobblestone streets, reflecting its long history as a key Spanish outpost in the Caribbean.
