The Danish energy company Ørsted has initiated legal action against the US government’s decision to suspend its massive ‘Revolution Wind’ offshore wind project off the coast of Rhode Island.

This escalatory step comes after the US administration froze all major offshore wind project leases last December.

The company, in collaboration with its partner ‘Skyborn’, explained that resorting to the courts has become “a necessary step to protect the project’s rights,” especially since work on it is nearly 85% complete, with 58 out of 65 turbines already installed.

Reasons for Suspension and National Security
The Trump administration based its suspension decision on concerns related to “national security,” claiming that wind turbines could cause interference with military radar systems. Consequently, work has stopped at five major sites belonging to global companies like Ørsted and Equinor.

The Department of the Interior states that this freeze aims to give the government “time to assess the risks and how to mitigate them.”

For its part, Ørsted rejects these arguments, confirming that the project received all official permits in 2023 after rigorous reviews lasting nine years, which included direct consultations with the Department of Defense that concluded with formal agreements guaranteeing the project does not conflict with military interests.

This freeze is viewed as part of a broader policy by the current administration aimed at supporting fossil fuels (oil and gas) at the expense of renewable energy, which the President has described as “an expensive hoax.”

While the administration promotes these policies as a means to lower costs, economists warn that neglecting investment in clean energy will lead to higher prices in the future and deprive the country of innovation opportunities and economic growth associated with green industries.

Ørsted

Ørsted is a Danish energy company named after the scientist Hans Christian Ørsted, who discovered electromagnetism in 1820. Founded in 2006 as DONG Energy, it transformed from a fossil-fuel-based utility into a global leader in renewable energy, particularly offshore wind power.

US government

The US government is a federal republic established by the Constitution in 1789, following the American Revolution. It operates under a system of checks and balances between three branches: the legislative (Congress), the executive (the President), and the judicial (the Supreme Court).

Revolution Wind

Revolution Wind is an offshore wind farm project located in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Rhode Island and Connecticut. Its development is part of a broader U.S. initiative to expand renewable energy infrastructure, with construction beginning in the 2020s to harness wind power for regional electricity grids.

Rhode Island

Rhode Island is the smallest U.S. state, founded in 1636 by Roger Williams as a haven for religious dissenters fleeing persecution. Its official name, the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, reflects its origins in settlements on Providence lands and Aquidneck Island.

Skyborn

“Skyborn” is a fictional or unspecified cultural site, so no definitive history or description exists. If it refers to a real-world location, more context would be needed for an accurate summary.

Trump administration

The Trump administration refers to the U.S. executive branch under President Donald J. Trump from January 2017 to January 2021. Its tenure was marked by significant policy shifts in areas such as immigration, trade, and deregulation, alongside a unique communication style heavily utilizing social media.

Department of the Interior

The United States Department of the Interior is a federal executive department established in 1849 to manage the nation’s internal affairs, including public lands, natural resources, and relationships with Indigenous peoples. Its responsibilities have evolved to encompass conservation, wildlife protection, and overseeing agencies like the National Park Service and the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Department of Defense

The Department of Defense is the United States federal department responsible for coordinating and supervising all agencies and functions of the government related directly to national security and the military. It was established in 1947 through the National Security Act, which merged the former Department of War and Department of the Navy into a single, unified department.
