The organizing committee for the Australian Tennis Championship confirmed on Friday that American Venus Williams will participate in the tournament after receiving a wild card, marking her first appearance at Melbourne Park in five years.

Venus Williams’s last participation in the Australian Open, where she is a seven-time major champion, was in 2021, when she was eliminated in the second round by Italian Sara Errani.

Despite having participated in the Australian Tennis Championship 21 times before, the American has never won the title, having to settle for second place twice, after losing to her sister Serena in the finals in 2003 and 2017.

Williams, 45, said: “I am excited to return to Australia and I look forward to competing. I have enjoyed wonderful memories there, and I am grateful for the opportunity to return to a place that means so much in my career.”
