Tripoli – The Minister of Economy and Trade held a meeting in the capital, Tripoli, attended by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Labor and Rehabilitation, the Head of the Municipal Guard apparatus, the Director General of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, and the Chairman of the Board of the Tripoli Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture. The meeting discussed the situation of migrant labor and its impact on the local market, particularly in the wholesale and retail sectors.

During the meeting, the Minister emphasized the necessity of adhering to Ministerial Decision No. (508) of 2022, which regulates commercial activity and prohibits non-Libyans from engaging in wholesale and retail activities. He stressed the importance of joint coordination with the Ministry of Labor and Rehabilitation and the Municipal Guard apparatus to monitor foreign labor and control prices, noting that the ministry will issue a list of prices for essential goods this week. Additionally, a blacklist will be prepared for traders involved in price speculation, with legal measures to be taken against them in cooperation with the relevant authorities and the Central Bank of Libya.

The Minister explained that a daily mechanism will be adopted to monitor and control prices, especially with the blessed month of Ramadan approaching. He announced an upcoming meeting with traders to review production estimates and stocks of essential goods and to work on preparing a guiding import budget for supplying goods.

For his part, the Head of the Municipal Guard apparatus confirmed that the apparatus will provide weekly reports on regulating labor and monitoring the prices of goods for which official decisions will be issued. Meanwhile, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Labor and Rehabilitation indicated the ministry’s continued provision of necessary facilities to regulate the labor market, presenting the “Wafed” system launched to register labor and facilitate procedures for business owners and traders.
