The Oil Workers’ Union has warned of the consequences of the Government of National Unity delaying the approval of the oil sector’s budget, stressing that the issue goes beyond being an administrative problem to pose a direct threat to the country’s national security.

The union explained that the continued delay will lead to the disruption of periodic maintenance and development plans, and will harm thousands of employees and their families due to delayed salary payments, in addition to the potential for production to stop or slow down.

It also noted that this situation weakens the confidence of foreign partners and undermines opportunities to attract new investments in the oil sector, which is a fundamental pillar of the national economy.

The Government of National Unity (GNU) is a power-sharing executive body formed in South Africa following the first multiracial elections in 1994, which ended apartheid. It was established under the leadership of President Nelson Mandela and included members of his African National Congress alongside former political rivals, such as the National Party, to facilitate a peaceful transition to majority rule.

Libya

Libya is a North African country with a rich history that includes ancient Phoenician and Greek settlements, most notably at Cyrene, and later Roman rule. It was part of the Ottoman Empire before Italian colonization in the early 20th century, gaining independence as a kingdom in 1951 and later becoming a republic under Muammar Gaddafi from 1969 until the 2011 revolution. The country is home to five UNESCO World Heritage Sites, such as the archaeological site of Leptis Magna, a remarkably well-preserved Roman city.
